The SWUFE Law School is located in Chengdu City, Sichuan Province, China, which has been commended as “The Fairy Land of China”. Chengdu is the capital city of the Sichuan Province and the most important economic, financial, cultural and traffic center in Western China, covering a land area of 12,000 square kilometers and having a population of more than 14 million. As one of the top five most livable cities in China, Chengdu is well-known for such a long history of over 2,300 years, the habitat of pandas, delicious Szechwan cuisines, Mt. Qingcheng & Dujiangyan (UNESCO World Cultural Heritage) and comfortable life style. With her rich cultural heritages and beautiful scenic spots, there is such a famous Chinese saying as “Chengdu is a city that once you ever visited, you want to stay at for ever ”.

SWUFE Overview

◆The Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE) is one of the top three premier universities in the fields of finance and economics in China. It is directly supervised by the Educational Ministry of China, being one of the top 100 universities (out of 3000 universities and colleges in China) sponsored by the “211 Project”, a national initiative to foster 100 first-class universities in China in the 21stcentury.

◆The predecessor of SWUFE is the Kwanghua University which was founded in 1925. It was the best private university in China that time, with a lot of famous Chinese educationalists teaching thereat, including Mr. Hu Shi (the famous ideologist and the Chancellor of Beijing University then), Mr. Zhang Junmai (founder of the Constitutional Law of China) and so on. After the P.R.China was founded in 1949, the institutes and departments of business and economics of 17 universities in western China were restructured and merged , giving birth to SWUFE thereafter.

◆SWUFE offers 57 doctoral , 108 master and 33 bachelor’s degree programs in 27 university’s departments and schools, with the faculty members of over 2,000 and more than 24,000 full-time students. Remarkably, students in SWUFE have very high quality since only the very best winners (top 1% roughly) of the so-called Gaokao of China (equivalent to the A-level in U.K. or the S.A.T. in U.S.A) can get the offer of SWUFE during the past consecutive seven years since 2008. The average Gaokao scores of the candidates who have obtained the offers of SWUFE have been ranking 1st among all the universities and colleges of the Western China since 2008 according to the statistical study of SWUFE.

◆In China, more than 3,000 bank presidents or directors have graduated from SWUFE. Meanwhile, more than 140,000 alumni have been exerting great influence upon the finance and economics of China. Our influential alumni include Shang Fulin who served as the chairman of the CBRC (China Banking Regulatory Commission), Liu Jiayi who worked as the director of the National Auditing Bureau of China, Zhang Yujun who has been the only person acting as the CEO of the Shanghai Stock Exchange and the Shenzhen Stock Exchange successively, and Jiang Chaoliang who chaired the board of the Agricultural Bank of China (ranking 3rd among top 500 companies of the world in 2015).

Overview of the SWUFE Law School

◆The history of the SWUFE Law School can be tracked back to the Zhengyang Law School founded by Ju Zheng, the minister of the Ministry of Justice of China in 1946, along with Xia Qin, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of China then.

◆SWUFE Law School ranks 16thamong almost 700 Chinese universities with law schools or departments (according to the Ranking of Subject Competitiveness produced by the China's Research Centre of Scientific Appraisal of the Wuhan University in 2015).

◆SWUFE Law School now has 83 employees, including 70 faculty members and 13 administrative staff. The faculty consists of 25 professors (including Professor Ma Junju, former chairman of the Academic Committee of Tsinghua University and so on), 45 associate professors and lecturers, plus 30 scholars, judges, procurators, lawyers, and entrepreneurs as our guest professors, teaching 657 undergraduates, 313 post-graduates and 43 doctorate candidates hereat. Our guest professors include Li Shaoping, the Vice Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of China, and Hu Yunteng, the Senior Justice of the Supreme Court of China et cetera.

◆SWUFE Law School is qualified to grant a variety of degrees in law, including LL.B, LL.M, M.Phil and Ph.D., with a wide range of research fields being covered. As one of the 37 universities being authorized by the Educational Ministry of China to set up doctorate programs of legal science, it is the only institution having Financial Law Doctorate Program in China.

◆The Educational Ministry of China has accredited the SWUFE Law School to be “the Legal Talent Training Base of China”, since it has over 500 graduates serving as chief justices, chief prosecutors and leading lawyers in China's High Courts, City Courts and District Courts. Our alumni include Xie Shanghua, the Vice Chief Justice of the High Court of Sichuan Province, Du Jun, the Senior Justice of the Supreme Court of China, Zhang Xiaoyong, the Chief Prosecutor of the Procuratorate of Sichuan Province, Lu Hongda, the Executive Partner of Zhong Lun Law Firm of China (the biggest law firm in China). SWUFE Law School has close cooperation and connections with China's judicial organs of all levels, include the Supreme Court of China.

◆SWUFE Law School students have represented China to participate in the Jessup International Law Moot Court for three times and won great honor for Chinese universities.
